Summer has been very summer-y the past couple days: hiking, biking, cookouts, swimming, sunburns, reading, ridiculous movie nights including interpretive dancing to dr. dre, playing scrabble at landmark, eating eggs in a diner listening to animal collective on the jukebox, etc. school should be alright toooooooo perhaps.

last night was an unexpectedly amazing spanish night with food and watching amores perros and playing jenga. I love when things turn out less awkwardly than you expect. and I wish HB wasn't so segregated between HILT and everyone else. there are so many good, interesting people in the world. I am glad when I step outside whatever patterns and boundaries I have created for myself and everything goes well. for some reason in livejournal I have really choppy syntax, probably because it makes me feel like my entries are less serious/personal.

also, modern art sometimes redeems itself with things like this:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/telegraph/multimedia/archive/01181/arts-graphics-2007_1181540a.jpg (her exhibit is at the hirschorn right now, go see it, it's really interesting.)

I hope everyone else's breaks are also going well :)

songs I would like to play on the morning announcements next year

the criteria for this is: songs I like that are fairly appealing/accessible for others.

1. mirah- "don't die in me," "the light" and also everything else by mirah

3. yo la tengo- "the summer"

4. animal collective- "winter's love" (ok, maybe slightly less immediately appealing, but this would make my day)

5. bob dylan- "talkin world war III blues"

6. andrew bird- "scythian empire" or maybe something else.

7. bonnie "prince" billy- "easy does it"

8. the shins- "australia"

umm I'm sure I have more. what do other people want to play?

oh, the irony

In my reading of various reviews of twilight musing on its undercurrents and their implications, I somehow ended up clicking on a link for twilight fanfiction.

Writer's Block: On the Bus

Jam a bunch of people together in a tight space like a bus or the subway and something crazy is bound to happen. What's the most memorable thing you've seen on mass transit?

View 500 Answers

Yesterday coming home on the metro at 11ish, there were two drunk 20-something girls having an incredibly inane conversation in a very loud, obnoxious manner. "HEY! if you think I'm awesome raise your hand." "Tell her she's a tool. See, those girls think you're stupid too." "What's your name? Joe? Jim? Phil? Whatever." "Hey! this isn't our stop." (upon getting off at virginia square), etc.

I'm sure I have had more memorable experiences, but this was particularly recent.

oh! one time I overheard a frat-boy conversation about drinking beer from flipflops.

book memes

1. Pick up the nearest book ( of at least 123 pages).
2. Open the book to page 123.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people.

"It was all tiny houses, miniature chapels over each grave. Sabina could not understand why the dead would want to have imitation palaces built over them. The cemetary was vanity transmogrified into stone. Instead of growing more sensible in death, the inhabitants were sillier than they had been in life. "

new years resolutions

I actually did not write these on new years because I fell asleep so these are the so-far unedited versions.

1. cook more, and cook new things.
2. bike lots. take a day to bike out to mount vernon in the spring.
3. learn how to skateboard. apparently if you ever want to live in california this is necessary. (note: lack of balance/coordination might prevent the realization of this goal)
4. stop random gossip discussions, however hilarious they might be.
5. start learning portuguese.
6. read more books for fun
7. tell people what I am thinking, instead of bottling it up.
8. be cheerful.

p.s. you all post so many memes! I tried to read them but then I got confused about who was who and why caitlin was talking on the phone with emerson, etc.

aieeee I am so ridiculously tired. weekend: tea, cuddling, avoiding getting mono, a beirut-themed dance party in connor's car, being emotional and not understanding why, being tired, watching TEETH, using the word "bizarre" incessantly, ending up in strange sexual situations (again), doing amigos nonsense for far too much time, eating really good vegetable potstickers, horrendous harp recital playing, getting sick hmm.

things are hilarious, cuddling is nice, I wish it were easier to be un-self-concious, I am very ok with life at the moment.

things are ridiculous. I haven't done any english reading in a long while. I feel pretty good but wish I were more productive. I don't know how I feel about the election except thank fucking god mccain didn't win.

sometimes horrible things happen and I have no idea what to do or how to react, and everything is just incomprehensible and surreal. it also puts all sorts of other things in perspective.

/things I have been doing in large quantities lately:

actually practicing harp
listening to a lot of silvio rodriguez
reading science fiction novels from elementary school
crying over said novels
eating food
feeling really mellow about everything/
alternated with spazzing out about things like iodine pills
drinking tea/tea parties
taking naps

/things I haven't been doing much:

having class
studying for the SATS
studying in general
being bold

a silver mt. zion was fantasic, and emotionally draining. I didn't take advantage of the gorgeous weather last weekend, but I did watch spirited away, which was excellent. everyone is in my 8:20 calculus class next year. I don't think I'm going to like mark as much first thing in the morning and without his children. maybe if I start drinking coffeee.

:)

I like this frisbee thing. even if everything in my body aches a little bit and I still have something to write for euro. I think I will sleep in tommorow and skip 8:20. also, I love my mother, because she made me ramen noodles at 9:30 at night and took me to the library and let me speak monosylabically.

for my english fourth quarter class, I'm doing an independent study on latin american poetry and politics, and one of the requirments is to keep a livejournal detailing progress and analyzing poems and sharing thoughts about what I'm researching. If you're interested in reading it, or giving feedback, my journal is [info]m_hauptman.
